Unlike many other outdoor cinemas around the world, it must be noted that this one is so special because the Cine Thisio is not simply a tourist attraction, but symbolises the traditional open air cultural entertainment of the Greek people, regardless of their socio-economic status.
Built in 1935, it opens from April to October and is best experienced at night when the air is cooler and the Acropolis is floodlit (very romantic). The Cine Thisio shows both first-run studio releases and classic movies.
Recommendation: Being located in the heart of the Acropolis, the nearby restaurants and café’s tend to be tourist traps with low quality and overpriced food. To prevent the rip off, eat before you head over and only order popcorn and a beer when you’re there.
Tickets start at €6 and you can find more information on how to get tickets here.
